Fiji's Tropical Climate

Fiji Islands is just 18 degrees south of the equator and as such enjoys a pleasant tropical climate. Daily and annual temperature fluctuations are minimal, ranging from around 17 deg C to 30 deg C. There are basically two seasons - summer and winter. The summer months are from around November till April and winter falls from April to October.

Fiji Meteorological Service for information on weather reports, climate and cyclone tracking.

Summer: During these months the temperatures are in the higher range, as are humidity levels. Winds blow from the north-west and bring greater chances of wet weather, usually in the form of torrential downpours that clear later, but sometimes a depression can last several days or even a week depending on which area in Fiji you live. It is during this period that there comes the chance of cyclonic weather, but cyclones do not always happen and when they do the location in Fiji that they affect, and the severity, varies.

Winter: During these months the temperatures are in the lower of the annual and daily ranges but rarely fall below around 17 deg C. Humidity is low, with the trade winds blowing from the south east and bringing cooler, drier weather.

Vegetables and Flowers

Growing fruits, vegetables and flowering shrubs is very easy in Fiji - in many cases just stick a twig in the ground and it grows! This can be one of the most rewarding of lifestyle activities when you choose to relocate to live in Fiji Islands. Many plants, vegetables and flowers grow year round, including coconuts, dalo (taro), bananas and papaya. Others are seasonal and often fruit or flower more prodigiously during the summer months. These include the fragrant frangipani which blooms prodigiously during the summer months, and the magnificent poinciana trees (flamboyant or flame trees) that come into their element from around November onwards. Mangoes are seasonal also, with the main crop usually around October or November, and a second crop later in the summer.
